“See it on the biggest screen possible”, is a statement that gets thrown around often nowadays – the new trailer for Top Gun: Maverick makes the unspoken command in the first few seconds.

With Ed Harris’ ear-twitching iconic hovering over shots of desert landscapes and (shock) planes, big ships and a familiar silhouette of a pilot we haven’t seen in 33 years, nostalgia comes in hot courtesy of director Joseph Kosinski, and his good mate Tom.

Reprising his role from the original film, Cruise is back as Captain Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell instructing new recruits in the Top Gun program when the war between man and safely operated drone machines is at its peak.

If that competition wasn’t enough, Maverick is also being tasked with teaching Miles Teller’s Bradley Bradshaw (son of Goose) who is keen to follow in his father’s footsteps, albeit the ones that led to his untimely death.

Tension and aircraft look to be going very high with glimpses of a ‘tashed Teller losing his head a bit, in among Maverick riding his bike down the same old road, shirtless men letting off steam on the beach, and a bar piano getting its keys hammered yet again. It might be playing the same notes that we expected, but there’s also Tom Cruise reaching altitudes that stomachs weren’t meant to meet. Hurrah.

Returning to the Danger Zone is Val Kilmer as Iceman, along with Jennifer Connelly as Mav’s new love interest, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell and Ed Harris. You can see them all take off when Top Gun: Maverick arrives in cinemas in 2020, June 26.
