As you may have noticed, we are always shouting about how much we love our local independent cinema The Showroom, which is just a one minute walk away from our base here in Sheffield. This brilliant cinema is home to lovely staff, great food, and most importantly, a whole host of fantastic films and events.
With the month of March upon us, we take a look at just some of the unique and exciting things going on at The Showroom this month, and urge you to consider this venue as your next cinematic pit-stop.
Made In Europe
The Showroom is a member of the Europa Cinemas Network, and as such, is passionate about championing an eclectic mix of films from around the continent, both new and old. This month, they’re screening these three cracking films as part of their Made In Europe collection.
- Girlhood; Unless you’ve been living under a rock throughout awards season, you will no doubt be familiar with Céline Sciamma and her work on the stunning Portrait Of A Lady On Fire. Delve deeper into this immensely talented director’s filmography with this coming-of-age tale, showing every day this week until Thursday.
- Belle De Jour; French icon Catherine Deneuve (The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg) stars in this classic erotic thriller from filmmaker Luis Buñel in a tale of sordid suburbia. Don’t miss this, screening from Friday 13th January – Thursday 19th.
- Persepolis; If you’re fancying something really different, give this Oscar-nominated animated flick a try. With its unique and bold visual style, and powerful story, adapted from a graphic novel, is a must-see. Catch a screening Friday 20th – Thursday 26th March.
The Elephant Man
David Lynch’s classic tale returns to the big screen for its 40th anniversary this year, and The Showroom have limited screenings from 23rd-26th March, so don’t miss out. We can’t quite believe this film is hitting such a huge milestone, but this artistic and powerful portrayal of Victorian society and the extremes of humanity truly stands the test of time.
We love to see a director get their breakthrough, and it seems Nick Rowland is set for big things with his debut gig here. A dark, gritty thriller, Calm With Horses stars two huge up-and-coming talents in Barry Keoghan (Killing Of A Sacred Deer, Dunkirk) and Cosmo Jarvis (Lady Macbeth), and promises to leave audiences reeling. Drop into The Showroom on 12th March at 6pm for a special screening followed by a Q+A with director Nick Rowland.
Keep an eye out for reviews and articles about some of the screenings mentioned here, and more, from our own visits to this cinema throughout the month. As always, if you are planning to pop to The Showroom any time soon, let us know and maybe we’ll see you there.
