Here at JumpCut HQ we are very lucky to be a stone’s throw away from The Showroom cinema – a wonderful independent venue in the heart of Sheffield. Our team regularly visit the cinema, there’s always new and exciting films and events going on here, and we love it so much that we have decided to start a monthly feature to highlight all the amazing things The Showroom does.

Now, we could just tell you that you should make this your new favourite cinema simply based on the fact it’s a warm and welcoming setting for all your film needs, but there’s so much more to it than that. So, here’s three specific reasons why you should visit The Showroom in February.

Each year, The Showroom hosts the Japan Foundation touring programme, which offers a brilliant opportunity to catch some of the finest films from the Far East. This year’s season takes a look at the pursuit of happiness, meaning and fulfilment, across a range of different genres – and don’t worry, all films are presented with English subtitles, so there’s no need to learn Japanese just yet.

Here’s a couple of particular highlights this year that we can’t wait to check out:

This quirky story of a fractured relationship between a mother and daughter may sound like your standard family flick, but with the promise of a light-hearted revenge story, we reckon this one could pack some surprises. Book in for the showing on Thursday 6th February at 6:00pm.

If anime is your thing, then you cannot miss this otherworldly spectacle from Masaaki Yuasa (Lu Over The Wall). We love a good animated film here, and this love story will be great for fans of recent hits Your Name and Weathering With You. Check this out on Thursday 13th February at 6:15pm.

Get ready for your heart to be broken by this intimate and insightful documentary from director Naoko Nobutomo, which tackles Alzheimer’s disease in a most personal manner, as Nobutomo turns the camera on her parents to study their unfortunate decline. You can catch this film at The Showroom on Tuesday 18th February at 6:00pm, and the screening also includes a Q+A with the director.

As part of LGBTQ+ History Month, The Showroom is shining a light on groundbreaking work in lesbian cinema, with some truly brilliant screenings lined up throughout February. Here’s a look at some of the best films on offer:

A bold documentary looking back at some of the pioneer lesbian filmmakers of the last 50 years, this is essential viewing if you want to brush up on your LGBTQ+ cinema knowledge. Catch the screening on Friday 7th February at 8:15pm, followed by an after party with DJ Anna Kissed.

The critically acclaimed new film from Céline Sciamma arrives in style here at The Showroom – on Valentine’s Day no less – with a special preview screening. This film looks set to be the epitome of the empowering female love story, made by women, starring women, and celebrated the world over. Catch this on Friday 14th February at 6:00pm. You can also read our review from London Film Festival last year.

A selection of short films from pioneering queer filmmaker Barbara Hammer, exploring the female body, desire and pleasure through experimental and avant-garde techniques. Presented in conjunction with Doc/Fest, this is celebration of the legacy of the late Hammer, who, like so many since, strived to redress the balance and offer representation for the lesbian lifestyle. Check out this special event on Wednesday 19th February at 6:30pm.

Hark! If you’ve been waiting patiently to see Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe bring some nautical nonsense to the big screen, you may have found yourself disappointed with the limited release of this A24 flick over here in the UK. Well fret no more, as The Showroom is proudly screening this film regularly throughout February, and is actually the only cinema in Sheffield to be showing the film on its release day. This sublime sophomore effort from Robert Eggers (The VVitch) is absolutely bonkers, but this is where its true brilliance lies, not to mention a riveting story, gorgeous black and white cinematography and a surprising comedic edge.

See, we told you it was an amazing cinema! If you’re local to Sheffield or the Yorkshire area, or even just fancy a trip to this fine city, we cannot recommend a visit to The Showroom enough. We’ll be posting reviews and articles about lots of the stuff mentioned here, and more, from our own visits to this cinema, so look out for those. And if you are planning to come along to any of these screenings, let us know and maybe we’ll see you there.
