Todd Phillips’ Joker has become the first R-Rated film in history to cross the $1bn milestone at the worldwide box office. The film, which hasn’t been released in China yet,  had a reported budget of $62.5m – which also makes it the most profitable comic book film in history.

Exhibitor Relations Co. confirmed the film had hit the record-breaking milestone on Friday night,

The current five top R-Rated films look a little something like this now:

  1. Joker ($1bn)
  2. Deadpool 2 ($785m)
  3. Deadpool ($783m)
  4. The Matrix Reloaded ($742m)
  5. IT ($700m)

In terms of all-time worldwide gross, Joker is currently sitting at #44, sandwiched between Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone ($975m) and Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight ($1bn).

Joker took home the Golden Lion award at this year’s Venice Film Festival, leading us to expect a ‘Best Picture’ nod at the Oscars in February and although it’s still early days, Joaquin Phoenix currently has the best odds of taking home the Academy Award for ‘Best Actor‘.

We recently interviewed the film’s cinematographer, Lawrence Sher, and discussed him going from Godzilla: King of the Monsters to Joker, the influences on Joker (including Yorgos Lanthimos’ Killing of a Sacred Deer) and working with Joaquin Phoenix and Robert De Niro.

The JumpCast team recently reviewed the film in a recent episode, which you can listen to below!
