Well, there’s a headline I never thought I’d type. Filed under, ‘S’ for ‘So crazy it just might work’, Lionsgate has confirmed that they’ve offered Samuel L. Jackson the chance to play a game in the brand new take on the Saw franchise coming from Chris Rock.
The news comes directly from the studio (following a report from Bloody Disgusting) who discovered the original horror pieced together by James Wan and Leigh Whannel back in 2004. In an official statement, Joe Drake, the Chairman of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, expressed his enthusiasm.
“We think Samuel L. Jackson and Chris Rock along with Max Minghella and Marisol Nichols make this film completely special in the Saw canon and we can’t wait to unleash this unexpected and sinister new story on fans of this franchise. This is next level of Saw on full tilt.”
Originally starring Tobin Bell as the infamous serial killer, Jigsaw, the new Saw film sees Chris Rock as a detective investigating a splash of rather nasty murders, probably littered with contraptions that lead human body parts to twist the wrong way. Stress levels will no doubt be high, forcing Rock to seek wisdom from his dear old Dad, played by Jackson.
Joining the two for all the fun and games is Max Minghella (The Social Network, The Handmaid’s Tale) as Rock’s partner, and Marisol Nichols (Riverdale) will be Capt. Angie Garza, who will most likely tell her best officer who doesn’t play by the rules that he’s out of line and at some point during the events. Darren Lynn Bousman, who directed Saw II, III and IV. Rock is also onboard as executive producer after he conjured up the new story that he conjured up himself and is now being penned by Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg.
It sounds nuts that this is happening, but given that we’ve had so many funny folks try their hand at horrors lately, fingers are crossed (and thankfully not in some evil contraption) that this latest take on Saw is one worth seeing.
