J.A. Bayona To Helm Lord of the Rings Amazon Series
Once there was one director to rule them all, now it turns out that Amazon have found another to take on Middle Earth in their Lord of the Rings show; Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom director J.A. Bayona, so sayeth Deadline.
The site has reported that Bayona will act as executive producer but is currently only signed for directing the first two episodes. From there, the second place ribbon streamer are on the look out like Ringwraiths after hand dressing for equally high-calibre directors to keep the story going. However, what that story is won’t be a like-for-like retelling of the massive Oscar-winning trilogy.
Reflecting on his recent hiring, Bayona tweeted:
J.R.R. Tolkien created one of the most extraordinary and inspiring stories of all time. I can’t wait to take audiences around the world to Middle-earth and have them discover the wonders of the Second Age, with a never before seen story.
As it turns out, the upcoming show will tell tales that precede Frodo Baggin’s jaunt to Mount Doom, honing in on the Dark Lords Sauron’s rise to power and the gradual rise of men, which will span five seasons. Who will wear the ring and fight against it has yet to be confirmed.
Those that fear for the future of J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved epic story can rest easy, considering the writing talent involved, though. Amazon Studio have pulled in JD Payne and Patrick McKay who are taking point in a writers room consisting of talent like Breaking Bad’s Gennifer Hutchison and Game of Thrones’ Bryan Cogman.
Is it secret? Certainly. Is it safe? In Bayona’s hands? Without a doubt.
