Finally, after a so-far iffy summer, the sequels are back stronger. ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ swung in with a magnificent $185.1m 6-day opening, a record for that timeframe and yet another indicator that the MCU is far from on the wane. Not quite hitting the mark however was ‘Midsommar’, which currently sits on $10.9m after its Tuesday start. Its muted opening could potentially be down to the surprisingly strong hold of ‘Annabelle 3’; the latest Conjurverse horror earned a strong $9.5m in a weekend that potentially signals a brighter summer season for the U.S. Box Office.


How did the new releases get on?

It was an amazing weekend for Spider-Man. Opening on Tuesday to a record $39.3m set a precedent for what was to be a ground-breaking weekend, as by Sunday night it earned $185.1m$92.6m from Friday. The 3-day start in particular is the 2nd largest in Independence Day history, trailing ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’ by just $5m.

Dark of the Moon’s $1.12bn worldwide gross actually provides ‘Far From Home’ with a realistic target to aim for, with the latest MCU instalment looking to become the 1st Spider-Man film to reach $1bn. ‘Far From Home’ has already beaten the film’s 6-day start ($185.1m vs. $180.7m), and should at least beat ‘Dark of the Moon’s $352.4m domestic finish.

It’s not doing too badly as a follow-up to ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’, either. While ‘Homecoming’s 3-day opening of $117m trounces ‘Far From Home’s, the latter currently sits on a total that took ‘Homecoming’ over a week to earn. With both films sitting on a similarly high audience reception (A on Cinemascore), a similar Box Office run would see ‘Far From Home’ end on a good $360m domestic total – although we’re holding out for more.

Internationally, the film did even better, earning $244m from 66 countries, including $17.8m from the U.K. (another 6-day opening), for a $580m running total worldwide. Following in the footsteps of ‘Endgame’ and ‘Captain Marvel’, which both saw huge openings respectively, ‘Far From Home’ could well complete the hattrick of billion-dollar MCU hits, all in the space of a year. Superhero fatigue, anyone?

It wasn’t such a sweet time for horror ‘Midsommar’, indie studio A24’s latest release. The film, starring Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor, Will Poulter, and Willam Jackson Harper as travellers who encounter a Swedish cult, opened on Wednesday to $3m, on its way to a $10.9m 5-day start ($6.3m 3-day).

It unfortunately couldn’t reach the same opening heights as director Ari Aster’s last effort ‘Hereditary’, which opened to $13.6m last summer. The film went on to earn $44.1m domestically, and $79.3m worldwide. ‘Midsommar’ likely won’t reach meet the film’s total, both stateside and across the world.


How did the others do?

As expected, ‘Toy Story 4’ continued its dazzling run to earn $33.9m in its 3rd weekend, for a running total of $306.1m. It now stands as the 6th biggest Pixar film of all time in the United States, just $30m away from the entire total of ‘Finding Nemo’. Worldwide, its $650m total is enough to make it the 9th biggest Pixar movie, and with only a matter of weeks until it hits $1bn, the only way is up.

In what’s likely to be the surprise of the weekend, horror sequel ‘Annabelle Comes Home’ dropped by just 53% between from the timeframe 7 days ago, compared to the 57% drop by ‘Annabelle’, and 55% for ‘Annabelle Creation’. The film earned $9.5m in its sophomore weekend, for a $49.8m domestic total thus far.
