Expert in elbow drops and entrepreneur in entertainment Dwayne Johnson has just cut a deal with Netflix for his upcoming action comedy, Red Notice after Universal handed the gig over to the supreme streaming service.
Deadline confirmed that the film from Central Intelligence writer/director Rawson Marshall Thurber has been yanked from Universal’s release slate and is set to start filming under the watchful eye of the crimson ‘N’ in 2020. Joining Johnson for jollity and potential jaw-breaking is Ryan Reynolds and Gal ‘Wonder what she’s been up to’ Gadot. The film will be backed by Johnson’s own production company, Seven Bucks, and the man himself added some comments on the recent partnership.
“With Red Notice, our goal at Seven Bucks Productions was to break down traditional barriers and create a true global event for the audience. Netflix has illustrated that they are the perfect partners to accomplish this goal,” said The Great One. “I admire the ambition of Netflix to become one of the biggest movie studios in the world. Their original content generates critical acclaim and invites full collaboration on every level of production. Their unbridled enthusiasm for Red Notice is equally matched by their commitment to entertaining audiences on an international scale. As the landscape of movies, distribution and audience consumption continues to evolve, our Seven Bucks focus is to continue to find the best platform and partners to thrive in this ever-changing environment. Director/writer Rawson Thurber has delivered a dynamic script that me and my co-stars and partners-in-heist, Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds, can’t wait to shoot.”
The particular story in the making sees Johnson as an Interpol agent on the hunt for the world’s most notorious art thief. The term ‘Red Notice’ is tagged to those lawbreakers that are on their top tier wanted criminals. Whether Reynolds or Gadot are set to take the title has yet to be confirmed.
The fact that Netflix have bagged a film that boasts such a trifecta of talent is just another testament to how much of a competitor they’ve become. Given that they’ve had a few misfires in the past, seeing the names of Johnson, Reynolds and Gadot all waiting to be added to your watchlist confirms they’re still a studio worth taking seriously (Odin’s beard! Imagine their Instagram stories!). Expect more details on this as it develops somewhere in among The Rock’s busy schedule.
