Here at JUMPCUT we’ve been keeping a close eye on the success of RNF’s Maturing Youth since we were offered the opportunity to review it last year. Since our review went live we’ve been lucky enough to share the short’s many successes and also chat with the cast and crew. You can find all our interviews and the latest news about the film on this page.
Today we’re excited to share with you an interview with Darleen Rae Fontaine, one of the stars of Maturing Youth who won an award recently for her performance. At the bottom of our interview, you can also find interviews Darleen did on the red carpet at the film’s premiere!
Would you like to introduce yourself to our readers…
Hello, JUMPCUT! My name is Darleen Rae Fontaine, I play Mae in Maturing Youth from RNF produced by Chase Michael Pallante.
Congratulations on winning the award for Best Supporting Actress at Maturing Youth’s world premiere! How did you feel when you learned of your win?
Thank you so much! It sounds so cliché but I have to tell you, I was so shocked and grateful to be nominated in the first place. Winning Best Supporting Actress was beyond any of my expectations. I am over the moon! Everyone on the film worked really hard to be as truthful as we could be, they really pushed me to rise to the occasion. I still feel so blessed!
What did you find most enjoyable about filming Maturing Youth?
I found it thrilling to be amongst such talented actors and crew. Everyone was so professional and committed to their work. It was super inspirational.
Were there any actors or characters you looked to for inspiration for your role as Mae?
My inspiration for Mae came from a mix of myself circa 2010 and a best friend I had at the time. We were just as you see Maggie and Mae, sort of silly and carefree. Tapping into that really helped to bring Mae to life.
How does the role of Mae differ from the characters you’ve portrayed in the past?
Mae really does differ from any character I’ve ever played before! I feel her optimism and friendliness more match my personality. Before I was cast for her, I had been playing a string of super serious pieces and serious, dramatic roles. I was thrilled to finally be able to be this bubbly, jovial young woman!
Do you feel like you learned a lot during this shoot?
I feel like naturally be on any set or production teaches you something new every time. I never worked with a child actor before Maturing Youth and Joshua was so lovely to work with he just brought an energy and a light to the set. We all loved him.
Do you have any advice for anyone else who may be just starting out in the world of acting?
My advice for anyone starting out is to study, study, study! It sounds boring but taking classes and learning about the craft is the best service you can do for yourself. A lot of people wonder where to start if no one will cast you because you have no experience. Having classes on your resume shows you’re committed to your career and learning more. That’s invaluable.
Do you have any future projects in the pipeline you can tell us about?
Nothing I can really discuss at the moment but definitely have some fun things in the works for 2019!
What’s your dream role?
My dream role is to play a villain! I’ve never been cast as one before. Villains come in all shapes and sizes as we’ve seen in many tv shows and films. I’ve always thought it would be an amazing challenge and so much fun to play the “good girl” you end up finding out in the end was “bad woman” all along.
We like to end our interviews with the most important question of all – does pineapple belong on pizza?
I have to say I have never tried pineapple on pizza before actually. The thought of it isn’t too appealing but I can’t knock it until I try it!
