A universe without boundaries, and apparently a budget without one too!
Every so often a trailer drops for a film that I know absolutely nothing about and that is exactly what happened here with the first trailer for Luc Besson’s ‘Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets’. It is based on a French comic series called ‘Valerian & Laureline’ by Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mezieres which has apparently been a huge influence on sci-fi classics such as ‘Star Wars’ and ‘The Fifth Element’ (and now I feel really bad about the fact that I’ve never heard of it). ‘The Fifth Element’ of course is another Besson film, and I definitely felt some vibes from that film whilst watching this trailer.
This trailer seems very focused on establishing its world and it does look really good – the visual effects are amazing and the alien designs are fantastic (some of them reminded me of Star Wars designs, but that’s no bad thing). This is all well and good, but of course, is no guarantee that the film will be good, and the trailer isn’t giving too much away. We get to see plenty of action but not a huge amount of story. The same can be said about the two leads Dane Dehaan (Valerian) and Cara Delevingne (Laureline) – they feature prominently but remain a bit a of a mystery. That aside, this is a big budget sci-fi movie from the man behind ‘The Fifth Element’ so of course I’m in, how about you?
